The custom apparel ecosystem has evolved. Starting a DTF business no longer requires thousands of dollars in industrial plotters on day one. Today, success lies in understanding the technique, knowing your costs, and mastering the pressing and marketing processes.

Step 1: Understand the DTF technique

Film and polyamide composition

DTF works by printing CMYK + White inks on a PET film. Polyamide powder is then applied as a hot-melt adhesive and cured in an oven.

Unlike sublimation, DTF allows printing on 100% cotton, denim, and dark fabrics without losing opacity. Understanding this helps you choose the right blank garments.

Step 2: Business model (Printing vs Outsourcing)

Reduce investment risk

The most common mistake is buying a converted printer before having customers. These machines require daily maintenance to prevent white ink from clogging printheads.

The safest route is acquiring a professional heat press and buying pre-printed DTF gang sheets. Your initial focus should be on brand building and sales.

Step 3: Pressing and curing parameters

The secret to durability

Wash durability depends on your press. Generally, you press at 160°C (320°F) for 15 seconds at medium-high pressure. A crucial step many skip is the 're-press'.

Once the film is peeled, press for 5 more seconds covering the design with Teflon or parchment paper to seal the edges into the fabric.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a home iron for DTF?

Not recommended. Home irons do not distribute heat evenly and lack pressure control, causing the design to peel off in the first wash.

What fabric is best for DTF?

DTF is versatile, but it stands out incredibly well on combed cotton (100% cotton) because it doesn't alter the garment's natural drape if the design is well optimized.
